Did you know that Ray was originally cast as the Tin Man,and Buddy Ebsen was supposed to play the Scarecrow?Ray was very upset about it,because he had long dreamed of playing the Scarecrow.He and his wife,Gwendolyn,approached the producer,Mervyn LeRoy,and--after a lot of arguing--convinced him to switch the roles.(Buddy had no objections to the change,but we all know how things turned out for him.I just hope there was no resentment or guilt between them.)
