Great Britain runs over 1,000 kilometres from south to north and extends,at the widest part,almost 500 kilometres from west to east.It is divided into three parts:England in the south,Scotland in the north and Wales in the south-west.
England is the largest and most developed of all the three.It has an area of more than 130,000 square kilometres,which takes up nearly 60 per cent of the whole island.Its population is more than 51 million and makes up nearly 85 per cent of the country's whole population.
Scotland is the second largest both in area and population.It is about 78,760 square kilometres,less than 30 per cent of the whole island,with a population of 5 million.
Wales is the smallest of the three.Its area,20,700 square kilometres,takes up less than 9 per cent while its population is no more than 5 per cent of the United Kingdom.
Northern Ireland has an area of about 14,000 square kilometres.It occupies the north-eastern corner of the island of Ireland,most of which is the Republic of Ireland.
