Experimental design
Most of this study was carried out during 1997 on an experimental farm located near Vicenza (north-eastern Italy) including a vineyard and a contiguous secondary hedgerow planted in 1993.The hedgerow was structured in pure modules containing 12–16 plants of a single species,i.e.elderberry (Sambucus nigra Linnaeus),hazel (Corylus avellana Linnaeus),hornbeam (Carpinus betulus Linnaeus),field maple (Acer campestre Linnaeus),dogwood (Cornus sanguinea Linnaeus),and mixed modules containing 60 plants of mixed species.The secondary hedgerows were pruned (1 m laterally,2.5 m at the top).Natural hedgerows,close to the experimental farm and containing the five above-mentioned plant species (usually 4–6 plants of relatively large size),were also monitored.The mite fauna of a single plant species was studied in three different situations,each having 2 replicates.The vineyard features and pesticide use are reported by Duso et al.(2002).Grass mulching was performed in the experimental farm.
