A variant on the needle flame test shall be used to determine whether structural or
energizable constituents,whose individual volumes do not exceed 1750 cubic mm,when arranged in multiple aggregates as in a subassembly,can cause flame spread to occur.The needle flame,as described by IEC 695-2-2,shall be applied for 20 seconds to the lowest mounted item of the multiple aggregate mounted in situ on the subassembly.On removal of the needle flame,if the resident flame condition does not spread to adjacent subassembly items,this constitutes evidence that the aggregate items are fire resistant in terms of Section 4.2.3.1.The test shall be made on three test specimens per configuration to ensure the repeatability of the results.
