Later,upstairs in my office,the best of winter surounds me.The desk lamp spills a pool of light on my work,my radio pours out a little Haydn quartet,the coffeepot chuckles and hiccups,and the cats make velvet smeicirles of contentment on the pillows.I will have put on a pot of vegetable soup,a compulsion that stricks whenever frozen precip occours,and the rich,languorous smell of it curls up to me under the eves.
