请问在句中Tom hadn't expected that his plan would break/broke down as it did.是该用break还是broke
我觉得would后面应该加动词原形,可是答案怎么写的是broke呢,题目出自上海外教社的大学英语精读第三版第五册P184,有没有人能解释下

因为前面是过去的完成时,所以后面要用一般过去时.如果把hadn't expected改为didn't expected ,后面就改用动词原形break了.
