rather than 可以作为连词或者介词,所以用trying 和 tried都可以连词后面什么都能加，只要有成分跟前面对应即可，最典型的连词是and，因为它只是连词，不作为其他词性。举几个例子：I like listening to music and reading. （动名词对等）I like coke and juice. （名词对等）I like cooking and I always cook. （动词对等）但是，上面那个句子中只有用tried时，rather than 可以理解为连词，在用trying的时候，rather than 要理解为介词。因为连词必须前后有成分是一致的，对等的。句中跟tried to do it on your own对等的成分是ask for help，而trying to do it on your own跟ask for help则不对等
