The most famous statue－the Sphin x(狮身人面像)in Egypt has been damage d.The experts are going to find out the c ause to protect it .The Sphinx has the body of a lion an d the face of a man.It was cut from lime stone(石灰石) near Egyptian pyramids a bout 1,600 years ago.Not long before a l arge piece of stone fell from the Sphinx’ s right shoulder.To protect the statue fr om more harm,a computer was placed on it to measure rainfall,wind speed and air temperature.The computer also mea sures the amount of water and air polluti on,the direction of wind and the tempera ture of the statue itself.The effects of ag e,wind,water and pollution have greatly weakened the Sphinx.Sunlight,wind,wa ter and pollution have been eroding(侵蚀 ) the outside of the statue for centuries.The experts hope that the information fr om the computer will help it from more d amage.They say the more they know ab out what is destroying the Sphinx,the m ore they can do to protect it.
