We argue that when people are short of self-
regulation resources,their habitual cultural responses will override the influence of perceived
cultural consensus or personal beliefs on their demonstration of culturally typical behavior.
However,in the control condition,in which sufficient executive resources are available,
participants will engage in a more controlled process and display culturally typical judgments
depending on their perception of how widely the lay theory of change is shared among their
cultural ingroup members.
