The waveforms of the currents are shown in Fig.5.Here,all waveforms were plotted from the raw data without filtering.In this experiment,the melting current (or total current) is approximately 225amps while the base metal is approximately 80amps.There are no spatters observed although the base metal current is only 80amps and is not pulsed.(Conventional GMAW would require a 225amps or greater continuous base metal current for 1.2mm diameter steel wire to produce the spray transfer which can eliminate spatters.) It is apparent that the Dual Bypass GMAW method as tested on steel plates is feasible.
The ultimate goal of this research is to provide a new process to weld the LANL’s aluminum rings with a minimal heat input without significantly compromising the productivity.The ring contains a groove which requires machining to produce.In this present study,aluminum cylinders with 0.32mm (0.125 inch) wall thickness and 16.5mm (6.5 inch) OD are used to conduct experiments for process and welding procedure developments before actual rings are joined.
