understand和understood
在新概念第25课有这样的句子：1.the porter ,however,could not understand me.还有一句是2.I repeated my question several times and at last he understood.
问题是这课文是陈述过去的事,为什么第一句could后跟的是understand而不是understood?

第一句中could not是modal v.(情态动词）的用法,后面应该接动词原形.（但不是一出could not就用动词原形,因为这类词有做实义动词的时候,要根据不同情况来看.）
