Vicki's birthday is on October 31, which is the same day that Halloween is celebrated on in the United States, Children especially (特别) enjoy this holiday. On Halloween, they usually put on special costumes and go around asking their neighbors (邻居) for candy. They knock at the door and say "trick or treat." If the neighbors don't give them any candy, the children may play a trick on them! Children also make Jack-O'-Lanterns by carving the meat out of a pumpkin (南瓜) and cutting out holes for the eyes and mouth. Then when they put a candle inside, the pumpkin's face looks really scary (骇人的).
Since it's her birthday, Vicki's mother always bakes her a cake in the shape of a pumpkin. Then she covers it with orange frosting and makes a face on it with pieces of chocolate candy.
