Good morning,honorable judges and dear friends.
Frankly speaking,I used to be a very shy girl.My face easily turned red when I had to speak in class or even talk to a stranger.I remember vividly how timid I was when I stood in front of the classroom five years ago,making a self-introduction to my new classmates in junior high school.
Beginning from junior 1,I began to learn English.I tried all kinds of methods to improve my English.But the main challenge facing me was how to overcome my shyness.Then,one thing happened,which affected me deeply.
In August,2004,I came to Hefei with my father to attend his reunion party with his classmates marking the 11th anniversary of their graduation from university.I got an opportunity to talk with his American teacher.At first,I was not sure whether my oral English was good enough for her to understand me,but I did screw up my courage and went over to her.When I started talking,I could feel my heart beating fast.However,we had a pleasant talk about school life and ways of learning English.Only when our half-hour conversation was over did I discover that talking in English was not so difficult as I had previously thought and that I was able to make myself understood by a native-speaker with my limited English.From then on,my confidence grew quickly and I became more active in learning English.Three months after I entered senior high school,I took part in 2004 National English Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students and,to my joy,I won the second prize at the provincial level.
Today,I am confident enough to stand here on this stage of Outlook and compete against some of the most excellent contestants of our province.It is the biggest challenge ever for me,but I enjoy it,considering it a precious opportunity to improve myself in many ways.I will present myself to the best of my ability.And I believe this experience will inspire me to pursue the next stage of my life.
