In all fairness to exercise,however,we must also recognize
that many people do embrace its demands wholeheartedly and
pursue its beneficial effects through all the years of their lives.
Perhaps these people are made of sterner stuff than the lesser
mortals who reject such opportunities for self-improvement,or
perhaps it is only that they have a better understanding of the
potentialities of exercise as a man-made movement form.In
either case,their behavior provides us with clean-cut evidence
of some of the meanings men may find in exercise,and so we
shall keep their example before us as we begin our analysis of
the characteristics of all exercise fo rms.
