被the first, the last, the only修饰的名词常用用不定式作后置定语吗?
看到一条语法：the first/ second..., the last, the only, the next以及这些词修饰的名词后常接不定式作定语.
如： Charles Kao was the only ethnic Chinese scientist to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2009.
但是在课本里又出现这样一个句子：the only thing needed is a cell from your old pet.
到底the only修饰的名词只能接不定式作后置定语,还是也可以接分词?如果两者都可的话,什么时候可以接不定式,什么时候接分词呢?
