Bucyrus was one of the leading lights amongst the great construction machine companies. The firm had been founded as the Bucyrus Foundry Manufacturing Company in December 1880 at the instigation of the hanker Dan Parmalee Eells. During the First World War it built not only excavators, but also heavy railway cranes, as in fact did all manufacturers in business at this time. Between 1916 and 1924, 47 railway cranes (picture 149) and 20 travelling derrick cranes were produced. Together with four partners, the company founded the less profitable Wisconsin Gun Company and became active in the weapons trade.
