The caretakers took turns holding the baby gorilla, which her caretakers named Dunia, carrying her around on their backs, and touching her while she slept. “She didn’t trust humans right away,” says Whittier, “but she would rather be with somebody than be alone.”
After six months, Dunia was looking and acting like a healthy, happy young gorilla. Dunia also had a healthy appetite for the diet she was given – green beans, pineapples, bananas and other vegetables and fruits.
She is becoming more independent and enjoys carefree moments of exploration out in the grassy areas of the Project. The vets at the Project hope to place Dunia and the other orphaned Gorillas in a conservation area, and may one day release them into the wild as a group. Wherever she ends up, Dunia won’t be alone again.
