The relationship between distance fromroads and the value centroids was empirically examined by plotting thecumulative frequency distribution of point locations within successive 500-mbuffers drawn around major roads in the Chugach National Forest (selectedvalues are shown in Fig.4).The distribution of points indicates thatrecreation,aesthetic and economic values are located closer to the road systemthan intrinsic,life-sustaining and future values.For example,about 50% ofthe recreation,aesthetic and economic value point locations are situatedwithin 7500 m of the Chugach National Forest road system; in contrast,lessthan 30% of intrinsic,life-sustaining,and future values are located thisclose to roads.
