Options on futures contracts were introduced in October 1982 when the Chicago Board of Trade began trading options on Treasury bond futures.They were initially offered as part of a government pilot program,and the success of this contract opened the way for options on agricultural and other financial futures contracts.An option provides a choice.The buyer of an option acquires the right,but not the obligation,to buy or sell a particular item (whether a physical commodity,security,or futures contract) at a certain price for a limited time in exchange for the payment of a premium.Only the seller of option is obligated to futures trading.Like futures,options provide price protection against an adverse price move.In addition,the variety of trading strategies available with options or in combination with futures makes options attractive to a wide base of investors.
