The story is set in Chengdu, in which the large family of bureaucratic landlords:Juxin,Junming and Juehui are the major characters of the novel.The eldest brother Juexin and his cousin May fell in love at the first sight,but their life to be together was destroyed when Juexin's father agreeed.Thus,the feudalism power made him marry with Yu finally.But after his marriage,he could not forget May, at the same time, he did not want to leave Yu alone.His cowardice and hesitancy leaded an unhappy and unfulfilled life as both of two girls died.At the same time, the New Culture Movement stimulated Jueming and Juehui to exchange of ideas freely bypublications.However, the girl Mingfeng who fell in love with Juehui died by resist forced marriage with the president of an association Mr.Fong.On the other hand,Jueming's grandfater asked him to marry Mr.Fong's grandniece. Jueming got away from home was the main reason why his grandfatherdied.This sad story is end with Juehui breaking away from the Gao mansion.
