Though it does not have a long history,the Chinese art song has developed its own unique characteristics with the exploration of Chinese musicians.Chinese art songs have their own ethnic distinction,having absorbed vocabulary from a rich array of poetry and folk songs.The special nature of the Chinese language is paramount,as uniquely Chinese rhyming patterns,rhythms,and cadence are combined with varying lengths of syllables and converted into words expressing modern ethnic sentiment.The result is art songs that contain the ethnic cadence and artistic beauty forming the essence of both poetry and song.
As an acclaimed contemporary composer,theorist,and educator,Mr.Zi Huang created many musical pieces throughout his life,the most notable part being art songs.Among these art songs,the three most representative works are "Spring Nostalgia," "Reminiscence of Home," and “Three Wishes of a Rose.” Of these,I have chosen "Spring Nostalgia" and "Three Wishes of a Rose" as points of reference for an analysis of the characteristics of Chinese art song performance,from the perspective of the performer.
