The people （ living on the islands ）used the stars to find their way.（居住在岛上的人用星星来找路） .括号中的living on the islands是现在分词作定语,修饰the people,因为people 和live是主动关系.你用lived 的话,如果把lived看作过去时,那么这个句子就有两个动词（lived和used）,那么就至少需要在used前面加一个连词,把这两个谓语动词连接起来,构成并列谓语.如果你把lived看做是过去分词的话,那么显然people和live不构成被动关系的.那是不是过去分词做定语一定是要带有被动关系原则上是过去分词作定语都是表示被动的；当然，如果这个-ed结尾的“动词”不表动作而表状态就是例外了，如：The people interested in the movie will go to the cinema.(对这部电影感兴趣的人会去电影院看电影的)，期中interested就是过去分词被活用成了形容词了，不再是动词表被动了。
