这是分词结构代替并列小句,即：
The war went on for years, killing thousands upon thousands of people.
不可以用 killed,因为虽然也是分词结构,但是,这种过去时的分词结构所代替的小句或从句,永远发生在主句所表示的动作之前,但这句话,根据句意,并不是这样,所以,不能用killed.
