It was said when William got onto the beach,he fell face down onto the sand by accident.To avoid looking bad in front of his troops,he scooped sand with both sands,stood up and yelled "I now own land in England!"
(This story is similiar to that of Caesar invading Britain; perhaps William's biography writer invented this to make William appear more similiar to Caesar.)
