Topic:Some people think that old buildings in cities should be destroyed and make room for new ones.Is it important to preserve old buildings?Do they stand in the way of progress of cities?
These days,it seems quite common that many old buildings are protected by historic trusts and international organizations.Yet,there remains some disagreement as to whether those old buildings should be demolished for the sake of urban development or not.Perhaps surprisingly,however,the protection of old building is still very important.
First of all,old buildings especially those with a long history and unique architecture(we call them historic buildings in this essay)should be safeguarded.Regardless of costly spending involved here,most of us indeed have benefited greatly as the existence of historic buildings.Specificallly,historic buildings as a physical link to our past and our ancestors,afford individuals both the sense of belonging and fulfillment.For instance,a child visits a historic buildings is able to learn more about to be a native of his or her hometown.Actually ,the longer history the building has,more proud the child feels.Moreover,those time-honoured constructions,like the history,can never come back again.In other words,we cannot afford to loose them.
However,reaching the conclusion that historic buildings should be preserved is not the same as assuming all the old buildings should be reserved.As urban expansion which can be attributed to the development of city,it is increasingly difficult for local residents and newcomers to have a space to live in.In order to meet the demand of the public as well as boost the development of cities,as I see,it is reasonable to dismantle a part of old buildings which are poorly designed and constructed.
By way of conclusion,I once again reaffirm my position that some decrepit old buildings,which discourage the process of cities,are better be demolished to leave more space for the public,but those of a long history and special meaning should be carefully conserved.
