请问后面怎么能用had?
只见过前面是sth或者doing 后面用had的
前面是动词的话为什么还是had?

这个是过去完成时省略过去分词的写法,完整的写法应该是：than we had been able to do so before,因为be able to 与前面主句的谓语动词重复,因此语法规定是可以省略的
这句应该错在critical,要用副词修饰动词judge,用critically
