An ascent to the Heart-gladdening
Pavilion in Nanjing
Throughout the middie reaches of the Yangzi,
Is a vast stretch of autumnal sombre hue;
A drear prospect from river to horizon.
Of gloom,one could not have gained a better view.
As fsr as one's eyes can reach are hills upon hills.
Ts appear as woman'hair-guard and chignon.
But what do they serve to arouse in one's heart?
Sense of frustration--bitter as well as strong.
Rays of the setting sun on the city walls;
A few straggling wild geese making plaintive cries;
All give to the roamer thar I'm in these parts,
A keen,painful sense of war-broken home-ties.
I unsheathe my sy sword;examine it blankly.
With,I rap the rail with a look intent.
I keep on rapping till l cover its length.
But none understad why l've made the ascent.
Of Jiying,of Jin Dynasty,l needn't speak.
An offcial in Luoyang,so much he pined--
For the perch fillets he had at home in Suzhou,
As autumn winds rose,from offce he resigned.
